Choosing a domain name is one of those decisions that's cheap to get right up front and expensive to fix later. Here's how to pick one you won't regret.
Keep it short and memorable
Aim for something people can hear once and type correctly from memory. Avoid hyphens and numbers where possible — they're easy to mishear or mistype ("is that domain spelled with a dash or without?"), and they make your domain harder to say out loud.
Make it easy to spell
If a word has multiple common spellings, or is easily confused with another word, visitors will end up on the wrong site — possibly a competitor's. When in doubt, choose the more obvious spelling.
Choose the right extension (TLD)
.com remains the most recognised and trusted extension worldwide, and is usually the safest default for a business. Country-code extensions (like .gr, .uk, .de) can be a strong choice if you're specifically targeting customers in that country. Newer extensions (.shop, .io, .app, and similar) can work well when they're relevant to what you do, but weigh that against being less universally recognised.
Check for conflicts before you commit
Search for the name you're considering, including as a registered trademark, before registering it. Building a brand around a name that infringes on someone else's trademark can force a costly rebrand later.
Register the variations that matter
Once you've settled on a name, consider registering the most likely alternate extensions and close misspellings too, especially if brand protection matters to you. You don't need every possible variation — just the ones a customer (or a competitor) is most likely to try.
